This project was made at the Hanze University of Applied Science in the  first year of Built Environment. It’s a concept for a new entrance area at the Zernike campus (1) Groningen. The design is targeted for students and fauna life on the campus. It’s designed so students can study and relax in an environment surrounded by nature without leaving the campus. The flora on the site is specifically chosen to stimulate bee and butterfly life on the campus.

The Zernike campus has multiple references to artist from Groningen. At this specific site, the Groningse painter Johan Dijkstra has a statue in the middle of the water basin. The color-pallet of those plants are based on the paintings of a Groninger painter, Johan Dijkstra (2) (3). By implementing the color-palette based on Johan Dijkstra his work, the new design should provide great coherence with the water basin and the rest of the entrance. With these design features in mind, this site will become a good living environment for flora, fauna and students and will be in great harmony with the rest of the entrance area.

The process started with deskresearch about the area, history and the new flora types. It's followed up by a sketching session where a couple of drawings (image 4 & 5) were selected to elaborate further. This resulted in four 3D drawings. (image 6)

The design that was chosen (image 6, number 4) then got more specific with a couple of detail drawings. (image 7) There were some small adjustments made after a feedback session. More stairs were added since the original design had stairs that were to big.

The area at the water is extended to make it more safe for people to walk on. (image 8)
